Early 19th century buildings, a shady promenade, a wonderful park spreading towards the sea and Potemkin Steps. The 193 steps, built between 1837 and 1841, descend from a statue of the Duc de Richelieu in a Roman Toga. At the eastern end a Pushkin statue and a British Tiger Gun, captured in 1854 during the Crimean campaign, stand before the pink-and-white colonnaded Odesa City Hall. At the western end of the boulevard is the Palace of Vorontsov - the residence of a former governor of the city built in 1826 in a classical style with surprising Arabic detailing on the interior. Another highlight of the city is Opera and Ballet Theater designed in the 1880s by Viennese architects Felner and Gelmer in the Habsburg Baroque of the day, with a number of Italian Renaissance features.

Description
During this excursion you will enjoy the city tour that combines general interest places like Prymorsky boulevard, Potemkin Steps, statue of the Duc de Richelieu, Opera and Ballet Theater and Jewish heritage sites among which are Synagogue, Stolyarsky Music School, Jewish school and Jewish Community Center. Odessa is rich in Jewish history. The city, located on the Black Sea, was considered liberal and historically had a large Jewish population. When the Soviet regime collapsed and the independent republic of Ukraine was formed in 1991, 70 years of Soviet oppression had taken its toll-very few Jews in Odessa knew of their Jewish heritage and culture, much less how to practice their religion. Thirteen years later, Odessa can be proud of a vibrant Jewish community, with more 40,000 Jews and a variety of Jewish agencies to support their needs. There are day schools, synagogues, a kosher restaurant, a Jewish museum, a social services agency, Hillel, two Jewish Community Centers in Odessa. The Synagogue was built probably by the beginning of the 20th century. Located at 21 Osipova Street is one of the two remaining synagogue in use in Odessa today. The synagogue is active today and a Beth Midrash is functioning in conjunction with it. Rabbi Avraham Wolff is the spiritual leader of the congregation.
